My installer said I should have a breather hole in my sub box. Why is this, & how would I determine the correct size & placement of the hole, etc.? The box is located in the trunk, 12" sub, Memphis 500w.

If your installer used the term "breather hole" then take your car and run.
I'm guessing that you are refering to a port. You would have to have a ported enclosure designed around your sub. It is not simply a hole. It is carefully calculated and thought out. You should not try to convert a sealed enclosure into a ported enclosure.
A ported enclosure will give you more output then a sealed enclosure. However, they do not work well with all subs. You will also lose some of the "tight" bass that a sealed enclosure gives you. This means there will be a loss in SQ.
Putting your sub in an enclosure that is incorrect for you sub you will get a horrible sound and can possibly damage your sub. If you were to drill a large hole in your sealed enclosure you will most likely wreck your sub.
Good Luck!!!

No it does not need a hole. Which by the way is called a port! there are ported boxes and unported boxes which is what you have. Now usually the high end stuff needs a ported box and the low end doesnt. pioneer subs are more towards the low end and therefor do not require a box. You could take it back and get a ported box which would make it sound a bit better but next-time get a better sub like JL audio, Diamond audio etc....

I've been doing car audio for over ten years. Never heard of a breather hole. The whole point of an enclosure is to create a volume of air that helps control the movement of the woofer. Cutting a hole in it makes no sense. Unless your installer is meaning to say a "port."
Read the manual that came with your subwoofer.

Your installer should know what size the hole (port) should be! Yeah you could get more output, but as stated, you will need a larger enclosure to accommodate the port.

It will be louder like this, but won't hit quite as deep. The only reason I can think he would have said this is if you asked how to make it louder. As for the size, (since you didn't give enough details) you should have your installer figure it out for you. You should ask HIM, to make sure HE KNOWS WHY. There are many programs that can help you. No NO NOO!
What the heck is he talking about?
Maybe a port, but a port is not just a hole, its a whole thing.
Ports are for bigger boxes, and they are much larger than sealed boxes.
If its in a sealed box now, don't do anything to it.
