Well I am guessing you dont have a auxillery jack in your car, If you did it would be as easy as pluging in headset. If you dont have money for a new headunit and all the labor the easiest thing for you to do is get a fm transmitter.
A FM transmitter plugs into any mps player, ipod, cd player etc through the headphone jack and sends the audio in a FM frequency that your car can pick up through the radio. I had problems with mine from walmart but it was cheap and i knew that when i bought it. I bought a better one later and had crystal clear music with NO WIRES except the mps player to the transmitter. You wont have to have any changes done to you head unit and nothing will be bplugged into it.
Below are some links to different transmitters. Some are made only for ipods which plug into the ipod usb while universal ones plug in through the headphone jack.
Im sure you can find one you like. These are very handy since you can take it in and out of the car if you feel like it. I drive to different cars and I use to just keep it with th mp3 player when I swtiched vehicles. Price ranges are 15 to around 60 dollars. I would get one around 30.

Yes it is possible to connect mp3 or ipod into the bmw factory stereo
your vehicle is prewire for a cd changer in the trunk ( left side ) if the cd changer is present it needs to be unplug you will find 2 plugs a 3 pin and a 6 pin, they are power and audio
now you can plug a bmw auxiliary audio input interface there
