I have a 2005 x-terra. Just got it from my dad and only the front 2 speakers on the dashboard work. My dad didnt care about music so he didnt mind but i do. I took it to a shop and they said it would cost 100 just to check it out. They told me that it could be the amp has blown or the speakers are blown or maybe both. What i want to know is if anyone has seen this and if it could be fixed without taking it to a shop. Thanks.

Does it have the factory Rockford Fosgate system?

Also, not to sound stupid, but have you tried operating the fader? Make sure it's not set to only play the front speakers. Not saying you don't know what you're doing, but sometimes we all overlook the obvious every once in a while.

This is very common on older cars. Even though your vehicle is only a 2005. It could be a number of reason but don't let the car audio people jerk you around. Door speakers are some of the easiest to replace. I doubt it is your "amp" because most vehicle do not come with a stock amp. Most stock radio's have a built in amp that is about 50watts. If your front speakers work then it isn't a problem with the radio. It could be a wiring problem or the door speakers simply have gone out and are no longer working. You can check out you tube and find a video that will take you step by step how to remove the plastic from the inside of the door if that is neccessary. Some door speakers have covers that pop right off. Don't be afraid to mess around. Anything electronic in the door can be unplugged and plugged right back in. Check for a few screws on the door around the arm rest if there are no speaker covers that pop off. Once you get the door covering off, turn the radio on an see if there is ANY noise coming out at all. Wiggle the two little wires connected to the speaker. If nothing then you should replace the door speakers. They are very inexpensive so check them out on amazon. If there are any other problems after you install new speakers, there maybe be a wire that came loose behind the stock radio deck, again YouTube will have videos on how to remove that. Just be very gentle when removing things. Most of the times there are only plastic clips holding all of this stuff in so you don't want to break those. Good luck!

Seems odd. Blown speakers in a factory set up car (not aftermarket high power set up) will usually make sound, but just sound bad. Also was anyone in the car that would be turning up volume to a high level to blow speakers?

It seems odd both would go out at same time. Removing a factory radio can be tricky, not sure about an x-terra, but you can research that. Maybe a wiring issue. Any work done on the car that might have caused a problem. If you can get to the speakers you can put a multimeter on the wires while radio is on to see is any power is getting to speakers.

its not uncommon that only two front work... your stereo might have the rear channels burnt out while the front still work, Ive personally had that problem with factory and even aftermarket stereos where the channels burn out and even the rca jacks are fried from some unknown reason. and as for both rear speakers to be out at the same time may just be coincidental... May want to try and use a load tester and check to see if your speaker wires are putting any juice out. What I usually did to check and see if it was blown was replace it with another small speaker to see if it would work at all. Then you can throw that out the window and get on the right path...

Most likely it's the speaker. Get to the wiring of the speaker and connect a 9volt battery, this should make the cone move. If it doesn't move, the speaker is blown. If it moves, maybe some fuze is blown to or on the head unit.

Remember to remove negative from the battery every time you are about to do any electrical work.

if it have been in basic terms a million speaker i'd aslo say undesirable connection. although, its happening to 3 audio equipment. sounds to me like your radio is messing up. if i've got been you i'd replace it with a head unit. that would desire to preserve the priority. plus its much less confusing then "tearing issues aside" and searching for a foul connection that isn't be there. additionally whilst a speaker blows, it doesnt shrink out. it only sounds terrible. so your audio equipment being blown shouldnt have something to do with your concern. one final element. if polk audio equipment from terrific purchase are only like the xbox 360, then audio equipment offered at inner maximum audio shops that certainly sound good would desire to be like having your person lightsabber. good success
