I don't know if there is even a difference. I am buying new speakers for my 96 cavalier.

basically the 6 X 4 speakers have a length of 6 inches and the height is 4 inches
the 4 X 6 speakers have a length of 4 inches and a height of 6 inches
virtually there is no difference between the two because you can set the speakers down or on the side and eigther way it would be 4 by 6 or 6 by 4

None. 6x4=24 and 4x6=24. But seriously, the speaker size that you are referring to is normally called a 4x6. I've never heard it called a 6x4. That's like calling a 6x9 a 9x6. It's the same thing. It's just not what it's normally called.

Other than the difference in length & height, I too don't think there is any difference. However, I found this guide for you- http://www.abt.com/about/Buying_CarSpeakers.php3. Hope it helps.
Also, I generally refer to this site for my car accessories - http://www.abt.com/scripts/site/mobile_fit_guide.php
