I want to build a home system, build my own speakers, enclosures etc & would like to use a car stereo as the central unit for the radio, CD & Aux input (for MP3 player), I don't plan to attach anything else, just want to build a standalone audio system. I believe this is possible as I have seen in Car Dealerships & Motor Parts Retailers displays of different stereos obviously powered by mains. But how do I connect it all & what would I have to do with regards to differences in voltages ie. UK Mains=240 volt & Car Stereo=12 volt

It will largely depend on how much money you have to spend and exactly how good you really need. I would start by going into a stereo store and comparing systems that they have setup and listen to the same thing one at a time to see just how much of a difference you can tell. Don't buy super high end just because it's better. It will be better but to your ear it might not make that much difference from something that is still good but is more moderately priced. Why waist money if you don't need to.

I did this using a transformer that originally powered a CB radio in the 1980's. It was a box with its own plug that i built into a wooden cube that I vented at the rear. It had car speakers on 4 faces of the box and the sound was really good.

You need a 10 ampere 13.8 volt DC table top power supply found at most any electronics store.

You need a transformer to step the voltage down. Look like phone charger - accessory shop.
