Buy a map and compass or a road atlas that way you wont get lost. An Ambulance in the Newcastle area using SAT NAV recently took over an hour to complete a 20 min journey.

The best may not necessarily be the cheapest!

I recently purchased a Garmin Streetpilot i3 from PC world for £99. It was available from other stores at various prices ranging from £120.00 to £179.00 There are many units available on E-bay, generally selling at about the £140.00 mark.

It's a small unit and has no fancy gimmicks - but it does the job perfectly adequately. It comes with a disc and USB lead for software updates from the Garmin website. Colour screen and user friendly address finder makes operation very simple.

It's the cheapest GPS sat-nav I've come across and I am perfectly happy with it. If you would like a touch-screen, interactive blue-tooth compatible unit, then this is not the model for you!

Hope this helps.

Everyone who uses a satelite navigation system will have a different idea as to which is the best brand. If you know what are the better brands talk to sales people in the stores that sell them. Get brochures on the various models and get prices for each model available. Check what features each model has to offer and make up your own mind based on what you are looking for. what is good for one person isnt always good for you.

For a unit that has all the gadgets, and more, you would not go far wrong by buying everything separately. i.e. get yourself a PDA or smartphone (HP, Dell, etc) and then buy the software package separately (tomtom do a software and GPS receiver pack). This way, you can use it as a personal organiser, mp3 player, video player, games unit etc etc after your journey ends, instead of it being tucked in your glove compartment.... Genius!

AVIC-N1 same thing as the N-2 but can be bypassed to watch movies while driving, the N-2 can't do that. plus it'll be a few hundred bucks cheaper, try looking on ebay for a seller, they'll usually make a good deal on the side.

Pioneer AVIC-N2

In-Dash Navigation System- $1299.90

GPS navigation systems have quickly become a standard feature in many of today's new vehicles and CarDomain offers many solutions to easily add navigation to any vehicle. Perfect for road trips or in-town commutes, portable navigation systems make everyday driving an easier, much more enjoyable experience.

With 24 satellites overhead, these systems will find your location and get you to where you want to be anywhere in the United States (some systems also cover most or all of Canada!) GPS was first developed for use by the military but was opened up to public use in the 80's as a free service with no subscription or monthly fees!

Calculate a route to avoid rush hour traffic, find out where the next rest stop, restaurant, or gas station is during a long road trip-once you have one, you'll never want to give it up! Today's navigation systems have a standard accuracy up to 20 feet. Some units incorporate a secondary system called WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) that can increase your accuracy up to 6 feet! And because these units are portable, you can take them from car to car, car to RV, or whatever suits your needs!
