Question:
Getting gps navigation on a car?
2016-08-18 11:23:32 UTC
I was browsing cars online and the cars that have Gps navigation always have a screen on the dashboard. And I do want Gps already in the car that I decide that I want. But the car I finally made a decision on has a touch screen but does not have Gps listed in its features. After getting the car, is there a way to get it on there?

hmmm... My Honda Civic lets me mirror my Iphone's screen onto the dash monitor, so it's kind of like having the gps in my car. I did have to buy an HDMI-Iphone adapter ($100) to do that and I realized I didn't like all the wires cluttering up my center console, so now I just use my phone as my GPS. So you may be able to do something similar if your car has an HDMI port and you use an Iphone. If not, then I don't think you can. You may be able to get their manufacturers GPS installed into your non-GPS model, but they would probably charge $600+ for that.

Better to buy a portable GPS unit. I like the Garmin Nuvi. It's pocket sized, so I can take it from car to car, and even use it while walking or biking. Updating the maps is a lifetime option for no extra charge. Updating a factory GPS has to be done by the dealer and is very expensive each time.

It generally can be done, but will probably require the replacement of the whole touch screen system, so it can be a bit expensive

Depending on what the car you have is, you may be able to buy an after-market unit like this that has all the bells and whistles with either a TomTom or smartphone GPS function.

It will require the expensive installation of a stereo head that has GPS capability. Some units without GPS can be upgraded to install a GPS module, but most cannot.
