You do not have to pay any fees for the navigation part of your system. All GPS systems work by receiving multiple "free" radio frequencies from different satellites placed around the globe; by calculating the distance from each satellite (at least 3 at a time) the GPS receiver can determine where you are (within 15-30 feet). Most GPS systems today are very intuitive - type in where you want to go, and the unit will get you there... it may not always the best way, but it will get you there.

Newer GPS receivers (like the Alpine) also offer traffic data information that tells you which expressways have severe traffic and can automatically avoid such areas to help you get to your destination faster, it is very helpful but this part of the system is NOT free, you will have to pay a monthly or discounted yearly fee to use it.

I question your choice of an in-dash system rather than a cheaper and more versatile mobile GPS (like a Garmin Nuvi, for example). With the mobile unit, you can easily move it to another vehicle like a rental or a friend's car, in fact, you can even use it when walking around an unfamiliar metro area. I understand an in-dash system has more of a "factory" built-in fit and no mounting arms or cords in the way, but at the pace of technology today - when your GPS unit needs an upgrade or becomes obsolete, its a lot easier to change out a mobile system than it is to change out an in-dash system.

Good luck to you!

basic navigation is free. the satellites the gps systems use are maintained by the government. now there are premium services that are available that do cost money. you have to pay for live traffic updates. personally unless you're a business/sales person that has to make it to a bunch of different places throughout the day i'd say forget about the live traffic updates. i've used both the pioneer and the alpine systems in my cars. i liked the pioneer nav better, it was easier to use, but i liked the way the alpine sounded better.

that's an exceedingly exciting question. regrettably, Toyota do no longer furnish it in america. In different international places like the united kingdom, it particularly is non-obligatory, besides the shown fact that it won't artwork in america (which i think). the 1st selection is to purchase aftermarket navigation equipment like Pioneer, Alpine, Eclipse, and Panasonic. you may desire to have the sprint kit, the two double din kit, or single din kit. This kit replaces the trim the place the radio is into the classic sq. shape of the double din beginning or single din beginning. The 2d selection, in case you reside in america, is to substitute with the real JBLToyota Navigation equipment. some Rav4s have JBL audio as an selection. it particularly is barely the concern of plug and play. The GPS antenna could be fastened interior the sprint board. besides the shown fact that it demands the real Toyota sprint trim from Asian international places (see Toyota cyber web web site from the Philippines as an occasion). How do i be attentive to that the 2d selection which i discussed works? I actually have a 06 Toyota Corolla with JBL audio on it, as an selection. I even have the Toyota JBL Voive Navigation from the 07 Solara. they have an identical plugs. The navigation equipment works, yet no voice education equipment. Why? the fee/opposite sensor isn't related to the Navigation and the JBL amplifier. on the Rav4, it has the fee/opposite sensor related to the JBL radio and JBL amplifier (which ASL get its enter). the 1st selection is greater suitable than the 2d selection as a results of fact as a results of complexity of the wiring setting up and alter. i desire this helps.
