Car Audio System Help?

Question

I'm looking to upgrade to a decent sound system with some woofers. The problem is that I don't know much about car audio systems. I have a '98 Toyota Tacoma SRS. This is a 2-door car but there are small 'seats' in the back. If i were to get a new sound system where would i put the subs? (would i take out the back? Put the subs under the seat?) Also, what are some good speakers/subs to get. Again i'm looking for good speakers and subs but something in the range of $500 at most for everything

However you install a sub in the extended cab Toyota Tacoma, you're going to lose some room.



I ended up just installing some really good front component speakers (JL Audio) and adding some 6X9's (Boston Acoustics) in the rear. Even then, I lost the storage space (the little cubbies) on either side of the jump seats. I put Dynamat on the back of the cubbies, stuffed them with polyfil, and mounted the speakers directly to the rear of the cubby doors. Along with a really good head unit and 4-channel amp (Alpine with head unit power pak), the sound was greatly improved. Perhaps not as much bass as with dedicated sub, but still some good low end.



It you want a dedicated sub, you might consider something like the Kenwood KSW-10 (under one of the front seats). Or one of it's many "clones". The Sound Ordnance B-8PT would be a good choice. It should fit, but you should check exactly how much room you have.

Check crutchfield.com. They always have great things to look through such as faqs. I would put your car into their website then search for sub boxes. I bet you they would have one that fits. Try to buy your car audio off of websites because most of the time they are much cheaper than stores. Make sure your stuff has good reviews, Also why I would try and check online. Amazon has a lot of great stuff for car audio that's pretty cheap. Also try craigslist! Just make sure you test what you look at first! Most installation shops will install even if you don't buy the stuff at the store. I would try to install yourself because you'll save a lot of money which in turn will mean better components. Most car audio isn't very hard to install if you search for videos and such on it. Even go to a store and ask what's good. Make a list of the prices then shop around. Brands to look for are kenwood, alpine, kicker, jvc, and polk audio. I prefer kicker and Kenwood myself. Stay away from companies such as boss and sony. They're make really bad stuff.
