Depends on how good, or bad, your current radio is. If it's a reasonable model, rather than something that's 20 years old and cost you £3, then a new radio might well help. But in most cars it's the quality of the speakers that results in poor sound, and that's harder to change.

It sounds like your just starting out on a system. First if you don't want to f*** ur alternator up then I would first sugest a kenetic battery( they r easy to install) if u get a capacitor don't get a one farad. I have a rockford fosgate one f and it drains when I play continuous bass. The headunit(stereo) really doesn't matter unless u can't equilize anything. Sounds to me like that's were all your crapy voice is comming from. Sony stereos have very good equilization http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_20506_Sony+CDX-GT640UI.html

I got mine for $185 lol. Ur speakers r fine just make sure they don't play too much bass. My speakers are about 20 watts and they r really loud( I put filters on them).

1st, I would deff. change the head unit.no diss. bro but Dual is probably one if not the worst Receiver u can get.And have been known to give power surges because they suck and r unprdictable(which maybe caused the thing with ur alternator) The best I would say is kenwood, they have the most EQ options(sub level controll, low, mid, high control, treble, bass,"bass boost" est.) and are for a good price too.2nd u should up ur door speakers because those explodes do exactly what the say there gonna do....explode into a world of nasty distortion.I would go with rockford Fosgate 6/9 or 5/7 for doors.I have the 6/9's and never happier. But never buy Pioneer not because they sound bad but for poor quality and business ethics.I owned a Pioneer Premier comp. series(3500w/1000w rms) and the voice coil blew after not even 2 months and when I called Pioneer to inquire their "1 yr warranty"they said that it didnt cover the voice coil....which is bullsh't since thats the main thing ur guaranteeing to someone.so thats why I've decided to boycott them.As far as ur alternator going,u probably needed anew one or a bigger,or like i said it might of had to do with ur head unit, because I'm now bangin 2 12'' Cerwin Vega stroker 124's(4000w/2000w rms)with a class "D" Directed d2400 amp and they SLAAMMM!!!!! Seriously I make people "tap out".And I've never had a battery or alternator problem,a little dimming of the head lights, but nuthin crazy.well hope i could help!!

change both. both are really low end. the speakers are crappy and the head unit is even worse. if you dont have enough cash to do it all at once change the head unit first, then the speakers. as for the sub, odds are the alt was just bad, it is an 88 and they do go out after a while.

that head unit you have is only rated for 60 watts max(15x4) so its only giving your speakers maybe 8 watts each. this is worse than most newer stock radio.

look at a head unit like this http://onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_21310_Kenwood_Excelon_KDC-X493.aspx kenwood excelon is my fave when it comes to head units, good features, good sound. this will give the speakers 22 watts each rms, much better than what you have now.

the speakers should sound a little better after that, but still pretty low end and you can get some better sounding speakers.

for the front- get this adaptor http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260355329319&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT it will let you use 5 1/4" or 6 1/2" speakers instead of the crappy 4x6 gm likes to use.

by the speakers your running now im guessing you dont have a huge budget and want to keep it kind of cheap so i would go with these http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_9124_Polk+Audio+db521.html they have a nice clean sound. if you can afford the upgrade switch to these http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_17948_Polk+Audio+MM521.html

if you want to go even better switch to a component set in front, http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_9112_Polk+Audio+db5251+5-1-4-+2-way+Component+System.html or http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_17949_Polk+Audio+MM5251.html

rear speakers- http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_9126_Polk+Audio+db691.html or again if you can afford the upgrade http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_23468_Polk+Audio+MM691+Open+Box.html its always good to match speakers, different companies have different sound.

you wont get very good lows without putting your sub back in, but vocals will sound a lot better. even if you wanted to get some smaller subs and a good amp to power them the low end will sound much better.

go get yourself a decent capacitor and what amp do you have?? get a decent one and let the amp push the subs, not the head unit.

I know a 1 Farad Memphis cap will make a huge difference, your alternator wont go out again. I have one in my truck and my lights dont even dem anymore. Below is a link were your can find this cap.

Make sure you positive and negatives are correct ! if its wrong it will make your speakers sound like they are playing in a tunnel . Not only that but it will also restrict bass. If you are still not happy , I would recommend a 4 or 5 channel amp .

First things first, I'm an Electrical Engineer, I've been doing car audio for 12 years now, and I can tell you that without a doubt that capacitors are the biggest scam in the history of car audio.

Your alternator went out because of your subs, that's the simple truth. Most vehicle only have about 20 to 30 amps of overhead on the alternator, which can easily be eatin up by a pair of subs, so mix that in with an alternator that was probably already on it's way out, and that's why it failed. There are ways to keep this from happening. A kinetic battery is an ok idea, but it's really only a bandaid for a much larger problem.

The easiest way to describe this is in terms of water, if a river is the an analogy for the power being supplied by the alternator, then a lake is the battery. If the river is running slower than the dam on the lake is letting water out, then the lake will eventually go dry, regardless of how large the lake is. A capacitor is like having an even smaller lake, but runs into the same issue, if there's more water leaving than there is coming in, then that lake will still go dry.

So a capacitor is a waste of money (with the exception of systems that have exceedingly supplemental power, in which case they are used for to keep signals passed between amps continuous rather than the actual "power flow"). A better battery isn't a horrible idea, but it doesn't actually solve any problems. I would recommend either buying a high output alternator, or trying to find a much smaller sub that only runs on 200w or so.

As for everything else, most of the people are correct on the brand recommendations. Dual is an absolutely horrible brand (sold them for 4 years and never once had one last more than a few years). Sony speakers arn't horrible, but there are definitely better options. If you are looking for a deal though, you are actually in luck, all the BestBuys nation wide are in the middle of their annual car audio transition, so all of their decks, and most of their speakers are on clearance prices. Plus, they're discontinuing Rockford Fosgate, so all their RF stuff is CHEAP!! I was in the other day and picked up the 100.1db amp (normally $700) for $200 brand new. I know they have a few good Pioneer decks (DEH-P5100UB) for about $150, which is a really good buy if you are looking to build a system, since it has very easy to use controls, excellent crossover capabilities, and a clean looking OLED display. As for speakers, they have some nice RF speakers on sale right now, so go take a look!!!

- To recap though, don't listen to the guys tellin you to buy a cap, they don't know what they're talking about. Save your $100 bucks and invest it in a better alternator or better stereo equipment. Check out BestBuy, but hurry, it won't last forever.

your alternator died because it's old not from the stereo system. having 2 12in. subs and factory speakers had to sound like ****! Get better speakers with crossovers and you will hear a world of difference. just bass thumping is not a quality sound system
