What does 'DAB ready' mean when describing a car radio unit? Does this mean it will receive DAB radio?

I have a domestic DAB radio, and want to have the same in my car, but there are various descriptons like 'DAB; 'DAB ready' and 'DAB tuner'. What's the difference - and how will I know a good one when I find one? Cheers!

"DAB ready" means that the stereo alone does not have the capability to receive DAB frequencies... But can however, accept the appropriate adaptor to recieve DAB.



"DAB tuner" usually indicates that the unit has a DAB receiver already installed into the unit which can therefore recieve and play DAB signals!



DAB tuners are not that common at the moment only a few units I know can actually recieve the signal and play it. JVC, Blaunpunkt to name a few!



DAB ready units are more common and are mainly in the higher priced units. The add on boxes to make then DAB players can be quite costly so if DAB is a priority I would make sure that you pick a "DAB tuner" not a "DAB ready" unit!

Really not much. It means if you have stations broadcasting in digital format, you can add a tuner to the unit that will get them, at an additional cost of course. Will it receive without adding the other tuner? Nope. How expensive are they? Ask the manufacturer of your unit. Can I use a different tuner from a different manufacturer? Nope.
