It depends on a few factors whether you should buy one or build one. First, I would not recommend buying a prefab one 90% of the time. They are made for general sizes and most often don't work well with the sub(s) you have. If you are going to buy one then it should be one that is custom built to the specs of your sub(s).

Another major factor for deciding whether to make or buy an enclosure is what design you are using. A basic rectangular designed sealed enclosure is not too difficult to build. If that is all your application calls for then you may be better off building one. A ported enclosure, on the other hand, often requires a detailed design for maximum performance. The sound of a ported enclosure can also be easily effected by the slightest miscalculation or build error. This is even more apparent with bandpass enclosures.

One last factor is the sound that you want from your subs. Enclosures can be designed in a way to maximize the sound that you are looking for. You can design an enclosure to maximize the SQ, for example. That would be a different design then a design for an enclosure set up for SPL. By having an enclosure custom built you can determine what you want the sound to be like by telling the builder what you want. The builder can then design an enclosure around that. This is something that you would not be able to do by yourself without some experience.

Basically, if you have the time and tools to build an enclosure it can be done. But, as you can see above, there are certain times when you should build one or have one built. Sometimes the few extra dollars are worth the hastle while sometimes it is best to just save the money and build it yourself.

Good Luck!!!

You can build one for cheap and easy.

Either 3/4" or 5/8" MDF wood.

3/4" is fine.

Buy the sub, then find out the recommended enclosure size. This may help.

Also, don't use screws unless you pilot hole them, even then, a nail gun of heavy duty staple gun works best, along with some glue. You need both.

Then they will let you know how big the hole needs to be. It will be slightly smaller than the actually sub size.

This can be cut using a jigsaw, just be steady.

You don't need to cover the box with anything, just the plain wood and a sheet can cost as cheap as like 20$.

I've done both and both have pros and cons. Prebuilts are nice because you don't have to do any work :) Customs are nice because you can use different geometries to maximize your trunk space. I had a sealed one built with the minimum recommended volume and I made it L shaped so it would jut over the space where my wheel well bubbles up in the trunk. This allowed me to have move useable trunk space. Either way, I think if you have expensive subs, why not have a custom box built. If you're just wanting some boom, and you don't care how it sounds as long as its loud and you have a huge trunk anyway, just buy one. I'm all about SQ and trunk space, so that's why I went the custom route. Do some online searches, all the parts you'll need you can get at home depot and autozone. Home Depot: MDF board (thicker the better), wood screws, liquid nail, spray glue. Autozone: automotive carpet. You can find instructions on the internet about box size, geometry, sealed, ported, etc.
