The REAL answer...
...yes it needs to be 12V but it must also push the amperage.
Any old 12VDC supply WON'T cut it. It must supply at least 2 amperes more than the rated fuse.
You will need at least a 13.8VDC 7 amp supply to do this. They can be found at Radio $hack.

car stereos run on 12 Volts dc
you can run the stereo with an adapter
your best bet is to get a 12v power supply from radio shack.

If you have a 12v DC/ac converter you can hook up your car stereo at home. You can also use a battery and hook up your car stereo just like in your car. the problem with it is when you run out of juice you have to charge it. I use to do it because my car was in the shop. It's good and bad.

You say a AC 12v converter. I hope that you mean a 12V DC power supply. Just be sure to include an inline fuse. You can get one at radio shack or some other electronic store.

We don't have Radio shack in UK anymore. Try Maplin for a 12v dc Output@ 5A.

If that is it requires, I don't see why not. Just whatever you do, don't feed it more power than it needs or it will cause a whole mess of trouble.
